What is Caregiving Crisis?

Caregiving Crisis is dormant as of spring 2023.

It was started in the winter of 2021 as a way to track and make sense of the news affecting caregivers amid the pandemic. In the 2+ years since, there has been a lot of news and a lot of talk about solutions. And I’ve been fortunate to be able to connect with thought leaders leading the conversation about these problems and their solutions. Since the pandemic, some things have improved (like the opening of Pandora’s box in terms of how these topics are out in the open — we’ll never NOT talk about them again), but some things haven’t (like lack of paid national leave, the inability of some to consider these issues anything other than a women’s problem.)

Given the pace of “breaking” news about the crisis slowed, along with the pace of conversations and solutions, so too did the publication of this newsletter. That isn’t to say the issues aren’t still there. We live them every day. That’s why I’m keeping the archives open - to reflect the moment in time when everything burst out into the open. May we look back on that time as the start of a slow push toward progress.

Original welcome note: Winter 2021

Welcome to Caregiving Crisis by me, Emily Fredrix Goodman. I’m a former reporter who now spends my days analyzing and understanding news trends. I’m obsessed with the news and passionate about the caregiving crisis that has emerged in the pandemic. This incarnation of the caregiving crisis has been brewing for a long time, and exacerbated by the pandemic, attracting headlines (“Women account for 100% of the jobs lost in December”). The pandemic has shed light, unfortunately, on the fragile infrastructure that leaves women and people of color at a disadvantage in society. But what are we all going to do about it?

Caregivers have little time to pay attention to these issues that affect them so deeply. That’s where I’ll come in. Every month I’ll answer: What are the latest trends? What are policymakers doing? Who is leading on this issue? What are the stories of these caregivers? And so much more. Subscribe today and tell your friends. Thank you and solidarity.
